OUR PORTFOLIO » TCC JAPANESE FRIENDSHIP GARDEN

Soundview Landscape and Sprinkler was honored to construct the Tacoma Community College Japanese Friendship Garden in 2007.

The TCC Japanese Friendship Garden was a collaborative effort between Tacoma and the Japanese city of Kitakyushu to create a cultural connection. The city of Kitakyushu is a Tacoma Sister City and the design plan for the garden was presented as a gift to the city of Tacoma.

The garden was created as a "karesansui" (waterless) garden that suggests the presence of water with the careful arrangement of stone and sand. It includes a dry waterfall arrangement anchoring the highest corner of the site, flowing through a series of step downs to a sea of white sand with a pebble beach and central island reached by stone bridges. A 12-foot-tall pagoda and several stone lanterns within the garden space exemplifies the concept of man-made objects achieving harmony with naturalistic settings.

In 2002 the TCC President's Council on Cultural Diversity planned the creation of the Japanese Friendship Garden.

The TCC Foundation used the expertise of the Kitakyushu Greenery Association to make the garden possible.

The garden was designed by landscape architect Mr. Toshiyuki Yano of the Kitakyushu Greenery Association.

Japanese landscape architects Mr. Sadaaki Mizuno and Mr. Toshiyuki Yano traveled to TCC multiple times to implement the garden design.
